Rare 18th century handwrought, fireplace basting rack. Specialized implements to make food preparation at the hearth were referred to as "fireplace helpers". Andiron form uprights, arched shoefeet and a surface quality that only a couple of centuries at an active hearth can impart make this a fine addition to any collection. Very small William and Mary blanket chest c. 1690-1710. Single drawer has dovetailed front, nailed back and is of early, flat bottom construction. Single arch mouldings and snipe hinges. Rosehead and T-head nails throughout. Old brownish-red paint is worn to reveal original red wash. Case is 31 3/8" wide x 15 1/2" deep x 30 7/8" tall.

Mid 17th century English stumpwork depicting the Roman myth of Pyramis and Thisbe, the basis of the story of Romeo and Juliet. Finely detailed needlework using a variety of different stitches and incorporating metallic thread and mica flakes into the multitude of animals, insects, birds, trees and flowers, some of which are three-dimensional, surrounding the couple. The quality of the work is unbelievable as is the condition of the piece that's survived for over 350 years. Sight size: 9 7/8" x 14 1/4".
