#48. Very
large and beautiful late 17th century New York great chair made of maple and ash. Posts are an incredible 2 1/8" in diameter.
Crisp, bulbous turnings with an additional stretcher between the arm and the seat rail, a feature found on only the very best
chairs. These stretchers, and the front base stretchers, are accented by a deeply cut groove in the swell of the baluster
turning. Later rockers were removed and the small notch cut to accept them has been patched, but the chair has not been ended
out. Old Spanish brown paint with a good surface quality and wonderful wear. Interesting and comfortable rope seat! Has been
in a private Rhode Island collection since the 1980s. 46.5" tall, 15" seat height. $5900.
